The Conscientious Consumer

The way we shop can have a significant impact on the environment.  Becoming a green consumer means making smarter product choices. Choices that are often kinder to your wallet, your health and especially the planet.

Marketers and product developers watch the choices we make when shopping. The choices we make when shopping reflect our values and preferences.  When you choose to buy products that have been designed to have a lower impact on the environment, then manufacturers will be encouraged to improve their operational environmental performance.

To buy or not to buy.

  • Can it be fixed? If you need to replace a broken product, find out if you can fix it or get it repaired before throwing it out.
  • Do you need it? Be honest with yourself when asking this question.  Think about that last few products you bought that you really thought you needed and see if it did make a difference in your life.
  • Borrow it - Consider borrowing items that you won’t get a lot of use from or your money’s worth.  If you don’t have the option of borrowing, see if you can rent it.
  • Think vintage - There are many great products that can be bought second-hand.  You can find electronic items such as computer equipment, DVD players and vacuums that are factory-refurbished.  Each item is checked for proper working condition and quality before it is resold.  Check out thrift stores for all kinds of items including clothing, furniture, kitchen-ware; the list goes on. You’d be surprised at what you can find!  Consignment shops sell higher-end hand me downs, sometimes items that were rarely used the first time around.

And remember, bring your own bag!
